GERIATICS IN CHINESE MEDICINE
Of the specialties of Chinese medicine, gynecology is certainly the one that has received the most attention in the West, with the publication of several textbooks on this subject. Geriatrics seems to be the forgotten specialty of Chinese medicine. And yet, with the increasingly aging population in Western countries, the treatment of the elderly requires more and more attention.
This workshop will present first the physiology of old age: too often, old age itself is seen as a pathology, but it need not necessarily be so. Therefore, Giovanni will first discuss the physiological changes occurring during old age.
Giovanni will also discuss the pathology of the elderly and how it differs from those of the young and middle-aged. Particular attention will be devoted to the question of Full vs. Empty in the pathology of the elderly.
The pathology section of the talk will dedicate special attention to the syndrome of Phlegm and Blood stasis, which form such an important part of the diseases affecting the elderly.
Finally, Giovanni will discuss the patterns and treatment of the following conditions:
- Coronary heart disease
- Hypertension
- Cholesterol
- Prostatic hypertrophy and cancer
- Decreased memory
- Dizziness
- Wind-stroke
THYROID PROBLEMS
Thyroid problems are very common in women and are often associated with gynecological conditions. Although traditional Chinese medicine provides an interpretation of the pathology and treatment of goiter, it does not specifically discuss the treatment of thyroid problems (as goiter does not always accompany thyroid dysfunctions).
The talk will therefore first present the traditional Chinese diagnosis and treatment of goiter, and then we will examine and discuss the diagnosis, treatment, and imbalances associated with hypo- and hyper- thyroid function.
The Extraordinary Vessels
The speaker has made a special study of the extraordinary vessels over 32 years of practice and will present the classic sources as well as his experiences and special point combinations. Giovanni will be discussing the Chong Mai, the most complex and clinically interesting of the eight extraordinary vessels. For the Chong Mai he will discuss: Pathway, Pathology, Physiology, Clinical Use, Treatment and Point Combinations, Herbal Treatment of the Extraordinary Vessels. In addition, highlighting the extraordinary vessels use in a wide variety of physical and mental disorders providing breakthroughs in the treatment of chronic and complicated conditions.
Giovanni Maciocia is one of the most highly respected practitioners of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine in Europe. Originally from a medical family in Italy, he trained in England at the International College of Oriental medicine graduating in acupuncture in 1974 after a three-year course. He has been in practice since then.
